SCSI Disconnect

Unlike removable media devices, removing a SCSI drive requires breaking the physical connection of an active SCSI bus. Drawing on more than a decade of SCSI experience, our patented SCSI Disconnect ensures bus and data integrity, providing true hot removal and insertion without ever having to idle or power down the system. As long as your OS allows a drive to be logically removed -unmounted or marked off- you can safely remove it while other drives are still transferring data.

Macrolink's SCSI Disconnect isolates the drive from the SCSI bus, allowing power cycling and removal. All SCSI signals from the "public" SCSI bus are isolated and regenerated into an individual "private" SCSI bus for each drive. When the Start/Stop switch of an active drive is pressed, the SCSI Disconnect first isolates the private bus, then removes the drive's power allowing the module to be safely swapped. Reinstalling the module and pressing Start reverses the process: power is applied to the drive, then the private SCSI bus reconnects to the public bus only after the drive and private bus are stable. and the public bus idle.

Other "hot" disconnect products buffer a limited set of control signals or don't completely monitor bus activity, allowing data on the public SCSI bus to be compromised. In addition, many of these implementations violate the SCSI bus stub limit of 4 inches. Some drives advertise "hot plugging" that allows it to be added or removed from an active SCSI bus. While there drives don't babble at power up - a common problem with earlier generation devices - bus errors due to capacitive or inductive glitches and ESD faults aren't eliminated. Our SCSI Disconnect fully supports all bus modes, and our true private SCSI bus allows the fastest drives to operate without worry of data errors from excessive stubs.

Whenever mains power is applied, our SCSI Disconnect automatically starts your drive, ensuring a graceful and controlled recovery from power failures. In addition to a Start/Stop switch, an optical sensor monitors the module's lock-down mechanism. If the module is unlocked without pressing the Stop switch, the SCSI Disconnect removes power and the drive's heads are retracted and parked in the landing zone. It's impossible to remove the module until it is isolated and powered down.

A SCSI ID switch is located in the SCSI Disconnect pocket and can be easily changed with the drive module is removed. The removable drive modules can be installed in any drive receiver, at any time.
